Diverse Minds, Shared Goals – Why Diverse Learning Environments Matter
The conversation around diversity, inclusion, and student life in higher education is gaining momentum through the InCITIES project. As part of this continued outreach, students from Laurea are contributing thoughtful blog posts that offer a personal lens into today’s learning spaces. Their reflections highlight the challenges and opportunities in creating inclusive environments where everyone feels valued and connected.
As the world becomes more aware of the complexities of the human brain, students in higher education with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are increasingly finding themselves receiving the help and support they need to navigate the demands of student life. Laurea University of Applied Sciences is one of many institutions that have prioritised student diversity by offering support for students with ADHD. For this blog post we interviewed a student who shared her experiences studying with ADHD.
University life presents challenges for all students, but those with ADHD often face additional hurdles such as difficulty focusing, managing time, and completing tasks. Despite higher dropout rates among students with ADHD, targeted support can empower them to thrive academically.
A student at Laurea University shares how access to practical support, like meetings with a special education teacher, tools such as AI and Kanban boards, and the flexibility of online learning, has helped her navigate her studies. Accommodations like extended exam time and multiple assignment deadlines have also made a significant difference.
She highlights the importance of being proactive, the helpfulness of Laurea staff and fellow students, and the value of a flexible, understanding learning environment. Her story underscores the importance of inclusive practices in higher education and shows how universities can support neurodiverse students in reaching their full potential.
This blog post is part of the European Union’s Horizon Europe funded project, InCITIES, to make cities more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable. The writers are students from Laurea University of Applied Sciences, one of the institutions involved in the project.
